"Go make them laugh!"

That’s what the supervisor of my internship told me when I was studying Audiovisual Communication at UPF and planning to focus on video editing. To me, the thought of making people laugh sounded preposterous. I had no idea that I wrote funny things, or even that I could write at all. But she seemed so convinced that her enthusiasm was contagious. I took an internship in scriptwriting, and the following year I was hired as a writer for El Jueves, the legendary humor magazine I’d been obsessively reading. I had a slightly better idea by then that I might be able to write, but landing a spot at a place full of people I admired—and not even being 23—felt like a monumental challenge. I wasn’t sure I could live up to it.

Eighteen years later, I’m still there. I also started writing plays (I went through a phase of wanting to act and wrote plays for myself to perform—don’t ask). I even studied Directing and Dramaturgy Institut del Teatre to study . To date, I’ve premiered over 40 scripts. In theaters across Barcelona (Poliorama, Gaudí, Maldà, Versus, Aquitània, Condal, Tantarantana, etc.), but also in Madrid and in countries like Italy, the USA, Peru, Mexico, and Costa Rica. Oh, and I’ve received three major awards: the Les Talúries Award, the City of Manacor Award, and the Born Award which apparently is quite major indeed.

And, since we’re here, I also run a musical comedy company, Generació de merda, with Gerard Sesé. Although I can’t devote as much time to it as I’d like because I work on commissions. And not just for theater, where I’ve written for producers and companies like Anexa, The Feliuettes, and Els Pirates. I’ve also written for television, including 3Cat, TVE, and La Sexta, and for clients as varied as Elrow (nightclub and events), Horrorland (scream park), and Ambauka (children’s music group). Sometimes making people laugh, other times evoking different emotions—but always adding a touch of comedy, even to the darkest scripts.
